Charcoal over Gypsum

  • SVA 4 John Street Stroud, England, GL5 2HA United Kingdom (map)

Thursdays - Saturdays 10am -4pm

Drawn with compressed charcoal on plaster, these panels depict themes of the Final Major Project of Level 3 Art Foundation students, (Fine Art cohort), at SGS South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. After the Easter break students were introduced to weekly workshops such as plaster, clay, Printmaking and collage where their individual projects were shaped by different materials and processes. The panels were drawn in-situ in the Construction Yard at college.

Made during the last few weeks of Foundation Art and Design Final Major Project these represent a bringing together of two departments for the first time. Art students worked in the maintenance yard on plaster panels left over from plastering assessments by maintenance students. This was a take-over of sorts, an installation of bespoke artwork and an intervention, bringing together students, staff and at the heart drawing on usual surfaces to create something unique.

“As the instigator of this happening and the designer of a series of hands-on Final Major Project workshops I was very impressed by the eagerness of the students to have-a-go and without hesitation up-scale their drawings and enjoy this particular surface to make personal thematic responses. The availability of more of such panels in the future and the on-going fruitful relationship with Construction has created a template for future events”

“This collaboration was a fantastic opportunity for SGS students from the construction and art departments to come together and showcase their skills and imagination in a new dynamic way. Both sets of students normally would not work together but this project has combined skills and knowledge they have gained over a very disruptive and stressful year into a celebration of success and the resilience of young people. It was a joy to be part of this project and look forward to working with Simon and his students in future years.”
